THE COUNT – COUNT BASIE THAT IS, IS BACK SWINGIN’ FOR THE RONA BARRETT FOUNDATION
In the history of Jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for over 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. Today, Basie’s sound has evolved into a movement with Diane Reeves, Harry Connick Jr., Jill Scott, Michael Buble, and even Sting as current disciples of the sound!
The Count Basie Orchestra which is directed by Scotty Barnhart has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once; won 18 Grammy Awards; performed for Kings and Queens and other royalty; appeared in several movies, television shows and at every major jazz festival and major concert hall in the world. The latest honor is the critically acclaimed release in 2015, “A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas!” – the very first holiday album in the band’s history. In fact, it went to #1 on the Jazz charts and sold out on Amazon! Special guests on the album included Johnny Mathis, Ledisi, the band’s very own Carmen Bradford and pianist Ellis Marsalis (patriarch of the legendary Marsalis clan).
On Saturday, July 8, 2017, The Count Basie Orchestra will celebrate a “Quintessential Jazz Evening” at The Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara for The Rona Barrett Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable senior citizens in Santa Barbara County.
Special guest artist Paula Cole has been acclaimed by the iconic Peter Gabriel, “Paula is an original voice both in what she saying and how she is saying it”. Cole is celebrating her 20th Anniversary as an artist with her latest release “Raven”. She has sold 3 million albums and has performed with music legends and many music genres from Dolly Parton to Chris Botti.
Paula celebrates Rona and the Foundation’s mission and is excited to support this benefit concert, “I’m so impressed with Rona Barrett’s humor, wit and loving dedication to seniors with Alzheimer’s! I couldn’t be more honored to take part in special fundraising event with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra on July 8th. It will be tremendous for me to sing with this historic, swinging, big band. I am thrilled to be part and know it will be a very special night.”
All proceeds from the benefit concert will be earmarked for “Harry’s House at The Golden Inn & Village (GIV).” Currently, GIV is an independent community within a continuum of care campus envisioned by Rona Barrett, Founder/CEO of The Rona Barrett Foundation. This model will offer seniors who reside on Campus currently as independent living residents the opportunity to seamlessly transition, due to health and life circumstances, to either our Alzheimer’s or Assisted Living care communities without ever having to leave it. In addition, this model will be scholarship-sponsored and all proceeds from this benefit concert will make this concept a reality as this Campus will open to in-need residents in 2018.
