As the parent of a child with special needs I can tell you first hand that this is NOT funny. It's been passed around the internet forever. How is it possible that anyone thinks that there is anything funny about the word retarded. So while you grannies are having a yuck yuck over a pretend story, the children who live with special needs are asking you to stop using a word that marginalizes their very existence.

Hello Rona:
I'm so happy you had this article put on your site! I am so concerned about my husband's memory. He is only one year older than I am and has always been very easy going. But over the past few years, well, he forgets a lot of things. Our doctor said this is normal aging. But I don't have this and am concerned.
Thank you,
Gail

Ms. Rona,

I love this very personal account of you meeting Ms. Taylor. I have been a private duty LPN nurse for sometime & I had always wished I'd had the pleasure to care for Ms. Taylor. I think she was an amazing person and not just what we saw on the screen....as you described beautifully in your blog.

I have cared for a few select high profile clients and the question I always like to ask someone. What is the best advice you can give/share for your best life. The response I got from one of my most interesting clients, "Never take no for an answer". I always remembered that, which relates to me, "never give up" keep on trying....

On your foundation, it is heartwarming and such an important foundation you have created. We need to have a safe and loving environment for our seniors~a place to call home. I am looking forward to following the beautiful communtiy you are helping to create~ xo Love you Ms. Barrett~ Then and Now...

Now that I am in THAT age group, I find myself exploring any and all places of residency for Sr.s. For the moment, I am trying to help my non- computer neighbors w/ research. Interestingly, I knew Sally Hall when we both worked at the VNA, so had met Rev. George, as well.
Then in Goleta, there's Friendship Manor, a facility that my dear Rev. Torvik helped found.
We are fortunate though, given that some of us live in smaller communities, we have many volunteers and many of us wouldn't be nourished without Meals On Wheels, aid from the various Loan Closets that provide canes, crutches and such for our safety.
I see that Miss Rona is involved in yet another facility for Srs.
For myself and those who are not able to write and respond with their thanks, I send it from all of us.

Thank you all !

Hi,

I am the Program Director for Willmar Community Senior Network (WCSN). WCSN just had it's 3rd anniversary. We are a 501 c3 that serves seniors through volunteers and referrals to keep them living in their homes as long as they can. It is kind of the "One stop shop" that you described. The reason for my email is that we are planning a fundraising event for March 24, 2012. It is a Dancing for our Stars where 6 local couples will take 10 weeks of dance lessons and perform to raise dollars for WCSN. Our goal is to raise $20,000.00 to help sustain our program. Our current budget is $65,000 and we are not state funded. Our passion to serve seniors is evident. Our volunteers put in over 3400 hours and made over 1,000 home visits to seniors in the Willmar, MN area. Willmar has a population of around 20,000 people. As our seniors age we need to have affordable ways to reach out to them along with develop relationship and tap into the wisdom of this generation before they are gone. I am looking for a celebrity to be at our fundraising event and came across you as I searched the web. If you can think of an celebrity who would love chance to advocate for seniors please let me know.
I can be reached at 320-214-7140 ext 1181 or my cell phone is 320-295-6242. You can read more about us at www.willmarseniornetwork.com. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Sheri Nordmeyer

This segment brought to mind the recent studies finding that cinnamon improves insulin sensitivity; it is tempting to connect the dots and suggest that cinnamon may also be helpful to deter Alzheimer's....
